𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟰 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮 𝗗𝗼𝘇𝗲𝗿 🚜 Most equipment conversations start with horsepower. Horsepower is almost always the wrong number to lead with. Horsepower tells you how much fuel it burns. These three specs tell you whether the machine can actually do the job. 𝟰 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘀: 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 (cubic yards) — how much material the machine moves per pass. This is the primary productivity metric. A Cat D6 blade holds approximately 5.5 to 6.5 cubic yards. A D11 carries 45 or more. Job production rates are calculated from this number — not from horsepower. 𝗥𝗶𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗹 (pounds of force) — the actual pushing or pulling force delivered at the ground contact surface. The final drive output. Two machines with identical horsepower can have significantly different rimpull ratings depending on final drive gearing. Rimpull is the real measure of a dozer's ability to push through hard material, hold a grade, or move a large cut across distance. 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 (PSI) — where the machine can physically operate without sinking. A standard Cat D9 runs approximately 12 PSI. A Low Ground Pressure variant of the same machine can operate at 6 to 7 PSI through wider, longer track configurations — the difference between a machine that can work a soft, wet, or reclaimed site and one that needs to be recovered. 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 → specify LGP (Low Ground Pressure) variant; standard track width will sink and damage the ground surface 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 → prioritize rimpull in your spec comparison; two identically-powered machines may differ significantly here 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 → blade capacity is the starting point; larger blade per pass = fewer passes per cycle 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀: 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 → two machines at the same HP may have different rimpull and blade sizes — one finishes the job, one doesn’t 𝗜𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 → puts a machine on a site it cannot operate without causing damage or getting stuck 𝗠𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 → larger blade means more passes through ground that won’t support it; LGP matters here first Horsepower affects fuel consumption. Blade capacity, rimpull, and ground pressure determine whether the machine matches the job.
